Choosing Your Tarot Deck

Choosing Your Tarot Deck

One of the first things you will want to do when learning how to read the cards is to choose your Tarot deck. This is usually done by viewing several different Tarot decks, and finding the one that seems to “speak” to you. However, if you are just beginning to learn the Tarot, you may find it easier to go with one of the “learner” or “beginner” decks.

Most experienced readers tend to look down on these types of decks as being a way to cheat during a reading. This is not true. Everyone who is learning has the right to learn with whatever works out best individually. Therefore, if a learner or beginner Tarot deck is what works best for you, there is no shame in using that. These  decks have the meanings printed on the faces of each card. So, when you do a reading, it is quite clearly marked as to what each card drawn means. You can see how this would be helpful in learning the card meanings.

There are many popular Tarot decks that readers choose to work with. While most readers have their favorite deck to use for readings, most own more than one deck that they use on a regular basis. Choosing your deck is one of the most exciting and fun things that a reader does. Several readers become collectors of different decks, and never use those in their collection. It is totally up to you what you will do in this regard.

When choosing your special deck, look at some that really seem to grab your attention. Once you have narrowed it down to a select few, pick up the box of the deck you seem most drawn to. Spend a few minutes holding it and looking at it. If you continue to feel comfortable, and almost familiar with it, you have probably found your  deck. However, if it doesn’t feel QUITE right, keep searching. You will know when you have found the deck for you.

The deck you choose does not have to be one of the more expensive  decks. Price does not mean anything, in this case. You may find your perfect deck on a clearance rack. If that happens, consider yourself lucky that you aren’t spending an arm and a leg on your Tarot deck. It can also work the opposite way. Your perfect deck may turn out to be the most expensive one you have seen. Just remember, if you feel that it is YOUR deck, you should definitely consider buying it.
